LifeScience.com beschreibt in dem Artikel Medieval Justice Not So Medieval, daß mittelalterliche Rechtsprechung bei weitem nicht so brutal und ungerecht war, wie allgemein angenommen. Vielmehr ging es um die Schmähung des Täters in der Öffentlichkeit, aber vor allem dem Opfer einen (meist finanziellen) Ausgleich für das Verbrechen zugeben.
